Uncured Rubber with Steel Cord: Green Tyre Scrap with Steel Wire

Uncured rubber with steel cord is a by-product of tyre manufacturing. It is unvulcanised rubber (green tyre) that still contains the steel cord (steel wire) inside. It is a highly valued material because it allows two value streams to be recovered: the SBR rubber and the steel.

Where does steel cord come from?

This material is generated as factory offcuts and rejects during the tyre production process, before vulcanisation. As it is uncured, the rubber keeps different properties from an already-vulcanised end-of-life tyre.

How the material is used

• Uncured SBR rubber: valued for rubber compounds, grinding and certain industrial applications.
• Recovered steel (steel wire scrap): the steel wire is separated and sent to metal recovery / steel recycling.
